Wayne Rooney really is in a rich vein of form – arguably the form of his life. United’s hitman took his tally to 28 for the season scoring the winner in the Carling Cup final, with seven of his last eight goals coming from headers – supposedly one of the weaker aspects of his game. But the question all United fans have to ask themselves is – do we rely on “Roo” too much?
I think we all have to admit that we do. He’s carried United almost single handily all season. When Wayne Rooney plays well, United play well. When Wayne Rooney fails to play well United don’t. Luckily for us, the latter has been of a small minority this season. Wayne’s workrate, creativity and determination on the pitch are second to none, but he’s now added a consistent amount of goals to his game and I think you will do well to find a better all round player on the continent at this present time.
In the 3 – 1 away defeat to Everton, Rooney was largely ineffective, likewise were United. In my opinion we are missing a spark to help supply Rooney’s goals. If Rooney was to have a long spell on the sidelines, where would United’s goals come from? I can’t see Berbatov, Diouf or Owen (who is now out for the rest of the season) scoring week in-week out. Sir Alex rarely rests his star striker, he’s just too important to us, but Rooney’s bound to need a rest sooner rather than later, especially with the World Cup fast approaching.
Just imagine the force United would be if a certain Cristiano Ronaldo was to have stayed in Manchester and helped Rooney out in front of goal. However, the fact of the matter is, Ron and Roo aren’t playing together and Ronaldo is a Real Madrid player. We can’t complain about the profit the club made from his departure – a Juicy 67.76million. But how far will that money go with the clubs huge Glazier ridden debts and the sudden state of inflation within the current transfer market?
If the money is right, the likes of David Villa, Sergio Aguero and Karim Benzema who grace the Spanish league would contribute to Rooney and add to United’s fire power emphatically. Ok, they haven’t played in the Premier League before and we know of some quality players, who are prolific abroad, but can’t hack it with the frenetic pace of the Premiership. The scousers friend Diego Forlan being a prime example. However, I think it’s definitely worth the gamble. Not only are these players regarded as some of the best footballing talents around, but with Valencia’s current financial problems, with Athletico Madrid’s poor season in no sign of improvement and with Benzema struggling to hold down a first team place at Real Madrid, these stars are by no means out of Fergie’s grasp.
In contrary, we all know the faith Sir Alex has in his squad of players. We also know that if he was to do any business, it would be in the summer. So let’s hope, come the start of next season, United have another world class goalscorer at their disposal to ease the pressure off United’s number 10!
