We thought it was a cruel practical joke at first, Sir Alex Ferguson continually dangled a date in front of us only for the date to come and go with no explanation but last Thursday we were assured that Owen Hargreaves would return to action after 18 months out.

Obviously Sir Alex wanted 1 last laugh because on the eve of the game in the euphoria of crushing AC Milan it was slipped in that Hargreaves would not infact be playing instead we were told we had to wait on more week but the wait has been well worth it because last night Hargo took to the field and it looked promising.

Playing in the center of the park, Hargreaves started slowly with simple touches just getting a feel of the game as well as a feel of the ball but as the game progressed he got more and more involved.  What were simple touches became longer balls and on the half hour mark he really opened up.

Picking up the ball just outside of his box, he used excellent close control to play his way out of danger before passing it off. He would receive the ball back and play a defence splitting ball over the top only for Cory Evans to be ruled offside although Febian Brandy may not have been.

He would play a couple more balls that saw Brandy called offside for moving too early but regardless of this he looked solid and although it wasn’t an all action, flying into tackles performance it was solid, he looked sharp and best of all he didn’t look like he had been out for 18 months.

It is definitely a performance to build off and he will be hoping that he can move onto full games from the 45 minutes he was limited to today. If he can do this, he could very well feature for the first team before the season is out.
