I’m sure I don’t need to explain the significance of the week ahead. On Tuesday we take on Bayern Munich in Germany and then this Saturday we host Chelsea at Old Trafford. It’s been described as the season defining moment for us but is it really?

Any team in the world would be happy to be in our current position, 1st in our domestic league, in the Champions League quarterfinals and heavy favourites to appear in the Bernabeau in May but this time next week we could all be singing a different tune. It is times like these that the term ‘squeaky bum time’ springs to mind but that being said there is no better team to go into such a position especially with the old master Sir Alex Ferguson in charge.

It would be great to pick up 2 wins, as beating Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena would set us in good stead to make the Champions League semi final. As long as we play the team Bayern Munich and not the name we should be fine whilst a win over Chelsea who will be the visitors to our grounds, would set us apart at the top of the table and enhance our credentials as favourites for the title.

Victories in these games would give us the momentum to push on in this the business end of the season (I won’t lie Arsenal were on some run up until the draw with Birmingham on Saturday and the manner in which they were picking up points meant the momentum was with them).

Although unlikely, of course we could lose both games and still be in the running for both the Premier League and Champions League but it is around these times where we should be looking to make it easy for ourselves (when have United ever done things the easy way?) rather than struggling.

This time next week we could all be celebrating being a step closer towards Madrid, a step closer to a record 19th title, both or neither. I’m hoping it’s both as we are well equipped to do so but as I said if it doesn’t go to plan we are by no means down and out.
