There’s something about Germany and the Germans, Bayer Leverkusn and Bayern Munich have been the bane of my life previously and last night Munich stuck to the script. In a reversal of roles from the ’99 Champions League final, Bayern Munich scored a last gasp winner to break United hearts.

Last night it was painfully obvious that we are a 1 man team, the media were right. But no I’m not talking about Rooney rather it was Edwin Van der Sar that starred for us. Following on from his performance on Saturday, Van der Sar showed he has plenty more to offer the team despite talks of signing a new goalkeeper this summer. He was immense and unlucky to concede the goals he did.

At half time Sir Alex said we were average and we were, perhaps even worse than that. We afforded Bayern too much respect, time and space and it was a case of us looking horrible rather them being great. The midfield was disjointed and couldn’t string a sequence of passes together. As the game went on it became a case of when not if they score and they did. Twice.

Gary Neville has faced some what of a mini revival in the past couple of games and his experience is invaluable in big games like these but his handball for Munich’s first goal was ridiculous and really blemished what was a decent performance from our captain. The same could be made for Patrice Evra, who has been one of our better players this season. He turned off at the end and allowed Olic to grab the winner. I’m pretty sure both of these points were not missed by Fergie!

Despite all Munich’s play and possession we really could have put the game to bed. Nani had chances as did Rooney and Vidic. It was just one of those games where it seemed nothing was going to go our way. The fact we got an away goal is a blessing and if we win at Old Trafford we should go through.

And finally probably the worse thing to come out of last night, Wayne Rooney’s injury. Currently we and the rest of the country are sweating buckets as our top scorer rolled his ankle late in the game. Although the talk is that the injury isn’t as bad as previously feared, in the run in we need all our players especially our top scorer fit. It’s highly unlikely that he will face Chelsea on Saturday but if we can have him back for the return leg next Wednesday (a slight chance) it won’t be a total catastrophe.
