Tuesday night’s comeback against Blackpool is nothing new for United fans, we’ve been doing it for years.
Manchester United have been pulling victories out of the bag for as long as I can remember and way before that as well. There will always be talk of what was the greatest come back: Macheda’s late winner sent me over the edge in 2009 and many see it as the impetus for our drive to the title that took us level with Liverpool. Solskjaer’s goal against Liverpool in ’99 was just as entertaining due to the opposition and whilst we may not have known at the time would be an integral part in us doing the treble.
Of course you can’t over look the big one, ’99 in Barcelona where we pulled off the most unlikeliest of victories against Bayern Munich in the Champions League finals to complete the treble.
vs Tottenham 01/02 Premier League
3-0 down at half time to Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege goals, United must have got some talking to at half time by Fergie and came out for the second half all guns blazing.
vs Aston Villa 01/02 FA Cup
2-0 down with 15 minutes to go? Yes that would be a problem for most teams but when your wear the red of Manchester United, its just a minor inconvenience.
vs Liverpool 98/99 FA Cup
Ryan Giggs’ wonder goal against Arsenal later on in the competition would be go on to be what people remembered about this competition but in the fourth round of the competition against old rivals Liverpool, United showed again the magic of the FA Cup.
vs Aston Villa 08/09 Premier League
In what is probably my favourite of the bunch, United went into this game with back to back losses against Liverpool and Fulham. Liverpool had just won the day before and were closing the gap on United in the league. Never one to back down from a challenge United stared down adversity in what was one of the season’s most exciting games.
vs Juventus 98/99 Champions League
After a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford United travelled to Turin needing a win to see their way into the final. United are never a team to do things the easy way and were 2-0 down in 11 minutes but in what was an excellent team performance and individual performance by Roy Keane, United were victorious in the Stadio Delle Alpi.
vs Bayern Munich 98/99 Champions League final
There is no doubt most will see this as number 1. In what was quite possibly the most remarkable comeback ever, United as usual left it late (extra time), but it made the victory all the more sweet as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wrote his name into the Manchester United history books, on what would have been Sir Matt Busby’s 90th birthday.
