According to The Telegraph Rio Ferdinand is to return to training this weekend in a bid to be fit for our end of season push.

Last week The Guardian claimed that Ferdinand had flown to Germany to receive injections in his back to alleviate the calf problems that have plagued him recently. Whether this was the case or not something appears to changed as Ferdinand may now be in contention for the visit of Fulham next weekend despite Sir Alex Ferguson claiming the defender’s season may be over weeks ago.

The 32 year old has been out of action since pulling up in the warm up against Wolves at the start of February and whilst Chris Smalling has proved a worthy deputy, Sir Alex is understood to be willing to restore Ferdinand to the starting line up if he can prove his fitness as his experience would prove invaluable as United compete for silverware on three fronts.

Talk of Ferdinand’s return is further good news on the defensive front as Nemanja Vidic returned from injury this week completing 90 minutes for Serbia against Estonia placing him in line for a return against West Ham tomorrow.
