As one of the most senior figures in our team, the opinions of Rio Ferdinand are to be respected.

Ferdinand who captained the team for the majority of the 07/08 double winning season, has had an up and down season.

Injury and controversy surrounding his England captaincy have ruled the headlines and although he feels he is back to his best now, he has been more than impressed with the man that has stood in for him, Chris Smalling.

Ferdinand joins a growing list of those praising the England u21 defender as club captain Nemanja Vidic, who has partnered Smalling on numerous occasions this season, did the same last month.

Speaking in United Review, Ferdinand extolled:

“Chris has been fantastic.

“He and Jonny are great young players with big futures at this club.

“In time I am sure those two will be the bedrock of the team.”

smalling definitely has a bright future i also think evans is capable he,s good on the ball just needs to strenghten up and stop been pushed around the box at set pieces other than that he,s got it

  3. PIP says:

Let’s not be too quick to critisize Evans. He is young and will improve. I think both lads will be long term successes.

  4. Don says:

I love how quickly we forget how good Evans was filling in for both Rio and Vidic last season.

    Gr8 future prospects

I’m glad Don remembers how good Jonny Evans was for us last season. He was a very good understudy last year and although he’s had a bit of an up and down season this year, which could be down to him not getting the chances due to Smalling doing so well, I believe he and Smalling will be ever presents in the fute for United.

Evans could be having “sophomore season syndrome”. I recall that happened with John O’Shea
