With just one point needed for Manchester United to secure yet another League title, understandably some of the celebrations have already begun.
Following United’s win over Chelsea yesterday they are on the verge of a 19th title and surpassing Liverpool’s record of 18, something that has been the aim of manager Sir Alex Ferguson since he joined the club in 1986.
Whilst Ferguson himself stated there is still work to be done it is unlikely that United will fail to secure just a point against either Blackburn or Blackpool and assistant manager Mike Phelan along with the players want to go out and win the trophy for manager Sir Alex Ferguson:
“You set targets all the time.
“The Chelsea result gives the manager an opportunity to get the 19th now.
“It is something we have been striving for and all the players will be very pleased if we can get that for him.”
It will be pretty interesting if the League tries to punish us for fielding so-called weakened teams for our final two fixtures.
Obviously it should be a mute point seeing as they can’t point to a consistent starting XI over the course of the season, and we should reserve the right to give some players more experience when little is on the line – let alone resting our best for our most important match of the year. Unfortunately, the FA often gives us a case to expect the worst.
On another note, winning yesterday with so many terrible calls going against us was icing on the cake for me. Lord knows our rivals remember for eternity any call that goes our way, but have amnesia when it’s the opposite. So it was so much better to virtually clinch the title and prove such notions false on a day most should remember.
