Last night The Busby Way went down to London’s Oxford Street, as the country’s best FIFA 12 players went head to head in the UK Finals of the FIFA Interactive World Cup.
The event, attended by QPR’s Jay Bothroyd and Fulham’s Dickson Etuhu, was a nervy affair as each player had just 8 minutes a game to display their dominance and at the end of the night the winner of last year’s UK qualifiers emerged victorious.
Birmingham’s Ty Walton, a competitor in last year’s Grand Final, beat Ireland’s Adam Johnson 2-1 to claim his place in this year’s Final with the hopes that he can emerge victorious this time around.
Both Walton and Johnson selected Real Madrid when the faced off and it was Walton who drew first blood via a Cristiano Ronaldo effort.
Walton doubled his lead via a Karim Benzema header after missing a penalty, meaning he went into the second half in a comfortable position.
Johnson, realising he was letting his chance slip, cranked up the pressure.
And it told as he got a goal back in the 56th minute. Sensing a way back into the game, Johnson pressed for an equaliser but Walton held firm and secured his place in the Grand Final.
Following the game a delighted Walton remarked, “I was delighted to be back again challenging for the Qualifier event here in London, so knowing that I’ve secured a place at the Grand Final is a dream come true. My experience at the 2011 Grand Final in Los Angeles was unbelievable so hopefully I can go back and win the tournament outright this year. The competition tonight was really strong as expected but I managed to pull a few tricks out of the bag to clinch a victory in the Final.”
Last year’s Grand Final winner Francisco Cruz was lucky enough to rub shoulders with our very own Wayne Rooney, who presented him with his award at the Ballon d’or.
