With Manchester United facing Newcastle on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup, it gives Sir Alex a chance to field players on the fringes of the first team, players returning from injury but just as importantly some of the younger players that will hope to break into the first team in the coming years.

Last year the competition saw faces like Larnell Cole, Michael Keane, Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Zeki Fryers all make appearances and Rio Ferdinand hopes that Sir Alex will continue with this policy of using the competition to prepare some of the younger player for first team football.

The defender is likely to sit the game out but believes United have enough young talent to see off their opponents and has singled out a few faces that he hopes to see as he told ManUtd.Com:

“It’s great and I’m looking forward to maybe seeing our new signing Angelo Henriquez, who has come in from Chile.

“I’m sure Nick Powell will play and I’m looking forward to seeing him again too as he’s a very exciting prospect. I’m excited to perhaps see Jesse Lingard play and I think Larnell Cole [could feature] as well.

“There are loads of them and I could go on and on and be here all day. We have some really talented, young players and I’m looking forward to seeing them.

“There is Michael Keane at the back too and hopefully they can stamp their authority on the cup this year.”

I do actually think some of the players in the first team squad need games. I mean De Gea needs to play in goal and Buttner at left back. Anderson and Fletcher need to play as well. Cleverley might need a game, as he hasn’t featured since Southampton. The last three matches he has been on the bench so it might be good for him to get 60 min. Nick Powell needs to play and to be honest so does Hernandez, but he probably won’t be involved.

    ………………Dea Gea…………..

    Vermijl….M.Keane…..Wootton…Buttner

    Cleverley….Fletcher….Anderson…Brady

    ………………Powell…………….

    ……………..Macheda…………..

Subs; Johnstone, Blackett, Tunnicliffe, Petrucci, Lingard, Cole, King

I don’t believe Angelo Henriquez will feature because he hasn’t been involved in the under-21 team yet. We do need to try and win this tie because it provides an opportunity for some players to keep up their fitness, and gives experience to other players. Someone like Anderson needs matches like this to shine again. Powell will want to go out and prove he should be playing against Tottenham. The way the midfield has been playing Powell is a viable option now.
