Tom Cleverley has backed Roy Hodgson’s decision to appoint his Manchester United team mate Wayne Rooney as England captain, and feels the striker could be a permanent appointment.

Rooney captained England on Friday night, scoring a brace, as they trounced San Marino and it appears Hodgson is warming to the idea of Rooney succeeding Steven Gerrard.

The armband has been passed around quite a bit recently with Rio Ferdinand and John Terry passing it back and forth but with both out of the picture Gerrard has found himself with it.

But Gerrard has had  injury problems and the midfielder will be 34 when the next World Cup rolls around, so Hodgson may opt to give it to someone who is likely to be in the team in Brazil and Cleverley feels this should be Rooney:

“Wayne has all the attributes to be a good captain.

“He is a winner. You could tell that before the game because he was quite vocal in the dressing room.

“I am not the manager but I would certainly be happy playing under a captain like Wayne Rooney. He is a fantastic player and a good leader.”
