Ruud Van Nistelrooy has backed hot shot Robin Van Persie to fire Manchester United to the title.

Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in his 219 appearances for the club, was at Old Trafford on Friday to see Sir Alex Ferguson honoured with a statue and he believes that his country man could delivery the Scot a 13th league title if he is able to keep firing in the goals.

“As Robin is proving right now, he’s making the difference on many occasions. If he can keep going like this through the whole season then I can see United landing another title win.

“I’m happy I’ve hung up my boots and now I can enjoy watching Robin play. I spoke to him a little while ago and congratulated him on his fantastic start.

“I wished him well and told him to continue like this. It feels like he’s been here for ever. He started scoring, got his first goal quickly and hasn’t stopped since, so hopefully it will continue.

“I think he’s fitted in really well at United. It’s important for a striker when he goes to a new club to start getting his goals in early.

“That’s what happened to Robin. He has the experience of the Premier League already and he’s proved to be a great signing, the way he plays.”

Aged 29 and with a history of injuries some saw the signing as a risk, but with 11 goals in 17 appearances Van Persie has gone some way to justify his signing and Van Nistelrooy agrees feeling it isn’t just goal the ‘special’ striker brings to the team:

“He’s proved those people wrong already. I was close to him playing in the national team and I was convinced of his qualities then.

“It still has to work out, but hopefully he can go on and do even better. It’s great to see, the way he plays.

“Robin fits into United’s playing style. He’s everywhere, involved in all of the play and the finishing as well, so that makes him special.”
