Van Persie celebrates with Danny WelbeckWhilst Robin Van Persie’s goal and freekick for United’s second saw him again take the plaudits in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, it was Danny Welbeck that was named as man of the match.

The young England striker put in a shift up front, and it was his run that put Skrtel under pressure, forcing the defender to haul Welbeck down for the freekick from which United scored their second.

Goals haven’t been forthcoming for Welbeck, with just 1 in 24 games for United, and yesterday he was guilty of missing chances too, but his overall game drew praise from partner Robin Van Persie who recognised the youngster’s effort in the win:

“Danny played really well. He was good in the combinations and played a big part in the first goal.

“A couple of times when we got the ball after they made a mistake he got in and I got in a couple of times.

“He has been brilliant. He is still young and has been really good in training as well.

“He has been working his socks off. He is a very positive guy. He loves to play football and did really well.”
