Phil Jones and Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Manchester United player Quinton Fortune feels Manchester United are capable of beating Real Madrid without stars Robin Van Persie and Phil Jones.

United came away from the Bernabeu with a well earned 1-1 draw earlier this month, leaving next week’s return leg at Old Trafford finely balanced.

Van Persie had a number of chances to put the tie to bed in the first leg, whilst Jones did a good job in midfield nipping dangerous situations in the bud so one would assume United would need to have them in the team when Real visit next week.

But Jones is struggling with an ankle injury whilst Van Persie picked up a knock against QPR last weekend but it is thought he will recover in time for the game. Even if both miss the tie, Fortune feels United can cope with their absences as he told BBC Radio Manchester:

“Robin will be a huge loss if he’s not playing, but it’s about the team.

“I think it’s United’s time, they’re hungry for success again. Robin’s been a key player for the team and the job Phil Jones did over there in the first leg was outstanding. These are important players.

“It won’t be easy but I do believe United are capable of beating Madrid without Robin and Phil.”
