With a 15 point cushion at the top of the table, it is presumed that the title is on it’s way back to Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have swept all before them en route to reclaiming a title lost on goal difference last May, and although it is still mathematically possible for Man City to recapture the title, odds of 1/1000 show how unlikely it is.

United take on City at Old Trafford tonight with hopes of putting the final nail in the coffin of City’s title hopes and putting to rest Roberto Mancini’s claims that Manchester United’s lead at the top of the table is undeserved.

In honesty, United took last season’s disappointment and have grown from it whilst City haven’t seemed to have progressed after winning their first title since 1968. It’s a trait of Sir Alex’s teams, win or lose, season after season he looks to improve in order to catch up with or widen the chasm with opposition.

This past weekend he began speaking about next season and how he is looking forward to the challenges it presents and it is because of this that United have already been installed as favourites to lift the title next season.

Ladbrokes have Sir Alex’s side as 6/4 favourites to win potential back to back titles, ahead of City at 7/4 whilst Chelsea, potentially managed by Jose Mourinho, are at 7/2.

Of course ahead of all of this there is still the small matter of tonight’s derby where United are again the 5/4 favourites and Ladbrokes will refund losing first goalscorer bets as a free bet if Robin Van Persie scores first or last.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said:

“The odds indicate next season’s title race will be closer and even more exciting. The only certainty is that the City chequebook will be out again this summer.”

Hopefully the odds prove correct and we can all make a bit of money!
