Tom Thorpe lifts the u21 trophy

Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg has hailed both Michael Keane and Tom Thorpe following the pair’s showing in the u21 Premier League final last week.

Keane returned from loan at Leicester to partner captain Tom Thorpe for the semi final and final of the competition, and having impressed in his spell at the King Power stadium, helped United to silverware with a commanding display at the back.

David Moyes has said that he will be looking to give youth a chance, as is United tradition, thus Henning Berg thinks the pair have as good a chance as any at making a name for themselves at Old Trafford.

Having watched last week’s game at Old Trafford, Berg told the MEN:

“Sometimes it is difficult to judge centre-halves over just one or two games because they can only play as well as the strikers they’re up against. If they don’t have too much to do it’s difficult to see how good they can be.

“Keane was given a stern test, though, and handled himself very well. They were playing against decent strikers. Harry Kane in particular is a very good player. Both Keane and Thorpe definitely have a chance, there’s no doubt about that.

“You’d like to see them play against first-team players and possibly go out on loan again.

“They’re comfortable defensively and on the ball while having the right mentality. That is so important when you play for United.”
