Rene Meulensteen has been linked with the assistant manager role at Anzhi Makhachkala having left Old Trafford earlier this week, but James Ducker of The Times has revealed that Meulensteen could have stayed at Old Trafford but opted not to.
Meulensteen ended a 12 year association with the club on Wednesday, when the club confirmed that he would be leaving. With Sir Alex Ferguson calling time on his 26 year spell at the club, Meulensteen follows his old boss as well as Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele out of the door.
But speaking on MUTV, Ducker claims that Meulensteen opted to leave of his own accord rather than being forced out after rejecting David Moyes’ offer to become assistant manager.
Some sources had claimed that Moyes had attempted to demote Meulensteen and that there could have been clashes between the two given their hands on style when it comes to coaching the players, thus Moyes was open to the idea of letting him leave but Ducker’s reports are to the contrary.
Highly regarded across Europe due to his extensive knowledge and practise of the Coerver system, Meulensteen will indeed be missed.
As far as I’m concerned it’s the first big mistake by Moyes to let the likes of Meulensteen go, who does he think he can bring in who are better than these guys ?
There’s and old saying that if it’s not broken don’t fix it, and if this is true that Rene turned down the asst managers role, that says a lot to me about what one of the top five coaches in Europe thinks about Moyes.
Are to also assume that Eric Steele was offered a position as well, and he too turned it down ?

I thank him for his work and wish him all the best but with moyes or even sir alex decision to give him the job I trust,
and I know he will do great, moyes is a winner you cant just tell by looking at the guy!
you say he has no respect and that maybe true but how can you earn respect across Europe managing everton.
As long as the players respect him and believe and understand they have a challenge on their hands, also knowing if they are successful the team will never be forgotten so I hope they understand they have a big season ahead.

Most of us wish he stayed but he opted out citing Moye’s hands on approach as the reason. United will surely get the right man to replace him. Hope not a Brit so he can compliment the gaffer well. GGMU
