Woodward, Rooney & Moyes

Manchester United’s vice chairman Ed Woodward has spoken on Wayne Rooney’s new £300,000-a-week deal saying there was never any doubt that it would be signed.

The new contract  is a big jump from the English player’s last deal that saw him earn £250,000 a week and was due to expire in 2015.

Rumours that the deal was delayed due to a disagreement over the terms of Rooney’s lucrative image rights seem to have been largely unfounded and although Woodward had said that there was a minor dispute over the control of these rights, the signing was never in jeopardy.

Woodward said that the commercial conflicts were no impediment to the overall deal and that there were simply some small matters that needed to be settled before Rooney’s future at Old Trafford was once again confirmed.

For Rooney the £300,000-a-week payday is the equivalent of hitting the jackpot at mobile casino Australia as after a disastrous season last year and coming close to almost leaving United he is back in fine form and playing some of the best football of his career.

After being subject to multiple bids in the summer by Chelsea FC and having to deny rumours that he had requested a transfer, it seems new manager David Moyes has convinced the forward to stay on at Manchester United by penning a £70m deal that will tie him to the club for the next four and a half years. The deal makes the 28 year old the highest paid player in the Premier League and firmly cement his status as one of England’s most valuable players.

The deal also has some far reaching consequences for the club as it’s almost certain that Rooney will succeed Nemanja Vidic to become the club captain. The Serbian will be leaving Manchester United in the summer to play for Inter Milan and Rooney is tipped as the most likely candidate to fill the position.
