Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen is a step closer to joining Manchester United after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted that the club captain’s future is uncertain.

Vermaelen has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, with new boss Louis Van Gaal keen to bring in the Ajax academy graduate. Initially Arsenal appeared stern in that the Belgian would not be sold to United and things went quiet.

But with the World Cup over and Van Gaal now fully immersed in his role as United boss, things have heated up again especially after the center back was snapped on holiday with United’s Robin Van Persie.

Speaking after Arsenal’s pre season win over Boreham Wood, Wenger admitted:

“I cannot guarantee he (Vermaelen) will stay, but should he go I would bring another centre-back in for sure.”

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both leaving Old Trafford this summer, United are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements.

Mats Hummels has been constantly linked with a move to United but Dortmund appear reluctant to sell, so if he can stay fit, Vermaelen for a good price could prove good business.
