Manchester United have reportedly shown interest in signing Fiorentina World Cup star Juan Cuadrado, with a reported €40m price tag doing little to discourage Louis Van Gaal.

The United boss admitted that upon return from America, the club would get down to handling transfers and it appears they have wasted no time, with reports from Italy claiming United are preparing a big money bid for the Colombian.

It appeared that Cuadrado was also on the radar of Barcelona, but with the Spanish club waiting for the departure of Dani Alves they could miss out on the 26 year old.

Fiorentina are reportedly hoping for a fee in the region of €50m, but United are hoping to secure a deal closer to €40m but will likely include bonuses.

But if this deal goes through, what does it mean for United star Rafael?

A fan favourite for his tenacity and clear love of the club, many would loathe to see Rafael pushed out of the first team picture.

But there have long been questions overs Rafael. Relatively young for a defender at 24, some are still worried about his rashness whilst others feel his delivery as a right back isn’t good enough and he doesn’t contribute enough as a right back.

With Van Gaal moving to a 3-5-2, Cuadrado could do a job as a wing back especially with Rafael picking up a groin injury that required him to fly back to England for treatment during United’s tour of America.

With United fighting to reclaim their place in the upper echelon of English football following a 7th place finish last season, Van Gaal may feel there is no place for sentiment regardless of Rafael’s status amongst fans.
