El-Ghazi Could Be Missing Piece To Resolve Scoring Woes For United

As we near the halfway point of the January transfer window, conversations and rumours are heating up per usual.

There are some very apparent holes at United that need to be addressed, like the scoring woes that have plagued the team all season long. Rooney’s role at the top has been weak, as he’s only found the back of the net five times thus far. Moving forward, the Red Devils need to try some of their younger players at the striker role, particularly Anthony Martial.

The 20-year-old French international has been slotted at right wing for most of the year, and is not shy about letting the media know his displeasure in that role.

Martial has arguably been the side’s most important attacking player and many feel the youngster needs to take the striker position from the struggling Rooney. With the lack of job security surrounding Louis Van Gaal, he must take action to put the Frenchmen in the traditional number 9 role.

In order to do this, LVG should look to the transfer window to find a suitable right-winger and move Martial up top. Looking at Europe’s top young prospects, United need to focus their energy this January on signing 20 year-old Moroccan-born Dutch international Anwar El-Ghazi of Ajax.

This year alone El-Ghazi has eight goals and one assist in 13 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie and has caught the eye of many of Europe’s top clubs this January.

While the Moroccan can play in the number nine role, his success on the right wing could prove to be more valuable for United in the second half of the Premier league. He has proven to be a very strong dribbler and has been disrupting defences all over the Eredivisie with his ability to cut to the inside of the pitch.

His fast pace and good crossing patterns are exactly what the Manchester side are looking for and his 6’2” stature would give the Red Devil’s another aerial threat on set pieces.

Signing El-Ghazi would play into the youthful design that Van Gaal has been committed to and his quick nature would play perfectly into the Manchester United scheme. Signing the Dutchmen would also free up Anthony Martial to play in different roles, at either the traditional number 9 or even #10. A change up top is definitely necessary, as the first half of the season has exposed the side’s inability to score.
