6203964Patrice Evra for me has proved his pedigree at Old Trafford since his torrid debut in a Manchester derby in 2006. Since then he has gone on to show that not only is he the best left back at the club (he saw off Gabriel Heinze who was pretty good in his own right) but also in the world.

It’s easy to see why he is quickly becoming a cult hero at Old Trafford from his mocking of Rafa Benitez as United stepped closer to securing the title last season against Wigan to his cheeky ‘men against boys’ comment in regards to United’s game with Arsenal in the semi final of the Champions League last season.

Such has his impact been at the club that when the club counted down its top players from the previous decade he made the list at number 10, not bad considering in the 10 years he only made 171 appearances.

He has continually shown his worth, this season even more so not only with his performances (He was instrumental in our equalisers against Sunderland and Birmingham as well as an electric cameo against Besiktas in the Champions League at Old Trafford) but also in this disjointed season where Sir Alex has had to chop and change his team for one reason or another, Evra is the only player that has featured in every Premier League game providing a constant threat down left flank with his never ending energy.

Come rain or shine his consistency is one thing you can bank on with exemplary performances that seems to reverberate through the team, even as United fell to Man City in the Carling Cup on Tuesday he bathed himself in glory with his display.

Sir Alex Ferguson has noticed the influence he has on the time and recently he has worn the captain’s arm band ahead of Rooney and other more senior players rising to the occasion, particularly against Wolfsburg where he took on the role like it was one familiar to him. So don’t be surprised if he takes over the role on a more permanent basis when Gary Neville finally hangs up his boots

Amidst all the talk of Nemanja Vidic leaving in a multi million pound transfer to Spain, I like quite a few United fans would be slightly more concerned if it was Evra that was being lined up with a move away from Old Trafford.
