We will keep this short and sweet as it is being done to death but today marks 100 years since Old Trafford opened.

Nicknamed the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ (a phrase coined by Sir Bobby Charlton) United got off to a nightmare start in the new ground, losing 4-3 to age old rivals Liverpool.

In its 100 years the ground has been called home by some of the world’s best players and has seen many a magical moment. Who can forget Real Madrid’s Ronaldo scoring a hat trick in the Champions League thus evoking a standing ovation upon being substituted? Or David Beckham’s last minute free kick against Greece to ensure England’s place at the World Cup?

The brainchild of Scottish architect Archie Leitch, Old Trafford has survived two World Wars (although it did suffer damage during the second causing United to have to play at Maine Road) and is still going strong. It has recently been upgraded to 76,000 seats and there are talks of further expansions, an indication that it will be around for years to come.

So whether you’re part of the Prawn sandwich brigade, a day tripper or a local join me as I toast Old Trafford, home of the best team in England.
