It seems when we look for a goalkeeper as long as you have 2 arms your elegible. So far the according to the papers the candidates for the soon to be vacant #1 shirt are Sergio Asenjo, Igor Akinfeev, Rene Adler, Manuel Neuer and Gigi Buffon. But this week another candidate has thrown their hat into the ring.

Atletico Madrid’s David De Gea had been mentioned before but not in any serious capacity but it seems following some solid displays between the stick for the other Madrid side the rumours have gathered pace.

At just 19 the 6ft 3′ stopper has years ahead of him and the fact he has secured the #1 shirt at Atletico so early in his career shows how highly he is regarded over there.

Just this summer he is said to have rejected a move to Roberto Martinez’s Wigan in hopes of moving to United and replacing Edwin Van der Sar although he doesn’t plan on leaving Madrid just yet,

‘All I know is what Atletico have told me – there has been contact between the two clubs, I believe now is not the time to move. I was about to go to Wigan last summer but I wanted to remain at Atletico and take my opportunity another time. The Premier League would be enjoyable for any player and it is an option I would like a bit later on in my life. I won’t rule anything out but at the moment, my head is focused on Atletico. For me, Van der Sar has been one of the best in the world in recent years.’

As we saw on Saturday Edwin still has plenty left (That save from Muamba is easily a front runner for save of the season) and has signed an extension to his contract but it doesn’t hurt to start looking early as after losing Peter Schmeichel it became painfully obvious that top quality goalkeepers aren’t easy to come across.
