Having already won the PFA player of the year award, Wayne Rooney has added to this by scooping the Football Writer’s Association player of the year award, emulating former team mate Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements in 2007/2008.

Beating Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba, Rooney took over 80% of the vote to secure the award.

Rooney said,

“I’m delighted to win an award with so much history and tradition, to follow a long line of wonderful players who have been honoured by the FWA since 1948 gives me real pride. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my manager at United, Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching staff and my team-mates, without whose help and support this award would not have been possible.”

Rooney has scored 34 goals this season and although injury has ruined his final run in, he still hopes to make United’s final two games against Sunderland and Stoke.
