There have been conflicting reports in regards to Michael Owen’s future over the past few days, but the striker took to Twitter this morning to clarify his position.

Owen has been a bit part player in his 3 year spell at Old Trafford, having to make do with substitute appearances as well as starts against smaller teams.

This season made just four appearances, injury has played some part in this but largely he has faced stiff competition from other strikers.

With that Owen has revealed that the club have decided not to offer him a new contract, and he was made aware of this following the testimonial of Harry Gregg on Tuesday:

“The Manager informed me after our testimonial match on Tuesday that the club would not be offering me a new contract.

“I have loved every minute of the 3 years I have spent at such a fantastic club.

“I would like to thank the players, staff and fans for their support and wish them well for the future.”

Ever the gentleman, United fans will remember his goal in the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa but perhaps much more importantly his winner against Man City back in 2009.

Like every United fan, we wish him well for the future.

Good luck Michael, I’ll never forget the winning goal against Man City……incredible moment. The right decision though for the team. Hopefully Owen can find a club and play every week for a couple of years. Please don’t do a Hargreaves and join a team you clearly were never going to get games with.
