The captain of Manchester United’s 2011 FA Youth Cup winning side, Tom Thorpe hopes to follow in the footsteps of team mates Michael Keane and Scott Wootton and make it into the first team.

In the pair’s absence from the u21 side, Thorpe shone in defence against Sunderland where he had to deal with first teamers like Conor Wickham and Ji Dong Won, as well as playing in midfield against Southampton last week.

Thorpe now hopes for more opportunities to showcase his ability and potentially put him in the running for a step into the first team frame.

Speaking to MUTV, Thorpe replied when asked if Wootton and Keane have provided motivation:

 “Yes, definitely.

“I think seeing them doing it makes you realise it’s not that far away and you will get the opportunity to go on. Hopefully, I can keep progressing and do that.

“I think it’s a lot about experience maybe – especially for Scott who has gone out on loan and has understood his role completely now.

“I probably just have to keep working hard, play well when I get the chance and show people what I can do.”
