“China? Me? FOH”

In a story that pretty much writes itself, The Guardian have claimed Rio Ferdinand could be on his way out of Old Trafford to join an ‘unnamed Chinese club.’

There are so many things wrong with this story and it seems like another case of 2+2 = 5.

Whereas it used to be some middle eastern country, China is now the country of choice for players ready wind down their careers whilst earning a fat pay check. Frank Lampard has been linked with such a move in January and with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka out there already (but constantly on the verge of leaving) it lends ‘credibility’ to the story.

So I suppose West Ham and Chicago Fire, two of many clubs apparently close to signing Ferdinand, are just going to stand by and let this ‘unnamed Chinese club’ steal him away?

And why is the club unnamed? Is it too much to ask of The Guardian that they at least let us know the club that is supposedly trying to prise away one of our longest serving players? Heaven forbid the club is unnamed because it doesn’t actually exist!

Sir Alex Ferguson recently said the defender could play into his late 30s and there were even stories that he was set to snub a new deal. The key part of that false story is that the club were ready to offer him a new deal, now it’s changed to United being ready to show him the door with China being a viable option.

The press is sketchy at best most of the time, this story is no different.

I’d say this story has no pulse.
