Anders Lindegaard: Dealt with West Ham’s aerial threat adequately and whilst he didn’t have much to do, when called upon, like to thwart Carlton Cole late on, he did just that. 7

Rafael: Looking at this back line there were a number of things that would have gone wrong in a game like this in seasons gone by but it is a testament to how well the younger player have become and arguably Rafael is leading the pack this season. Our most consistent performer this term, and doesn’t look like he’ll be letting up any time soon. Dealt with Jarvis and managed to get forward. 8

Patrice Evra: Another solid showing from the captain and attempted to stem the flow of West Ham attacks from wide postions. Good getting forward. 6

Jonny Evans & Chris Smalling: It is worth noting that in November 2010 this pairing went to Upton Park in the Carling Cup and conceded 4, they were dragged out of position and brutalised on a cold winter evening but 2 years is a long time in football and now look where they stand! The two were solid and stood up to the physical and aerial threat Nolan and Carroll presented. Smalling is looking a lot sharper with games under his belt, whilst Evans is becoming more and more important to United’s defence; a complete turn around considering where he stood 2 years ago. 8

Michael Carrick: Stepped back into the first team after being rested and picked up where he left off. It was his ball that set up RVP for United’s winner, impressive as he was the anchor in an attack minded team and helped protect the young defence behind him. 6

Anderson: After playing his way into the side with his display against QPR, hopefully he can stay here. Showed energy, buzzing around the pitch with another action packed display and is the perfect foil to his midfield partners with his direct and powerful running. 7

Tom Cleverley: A good save from Jaaskelainen kept his name off the scoresheet in the second half but that was the highlight of his game. He has good feet and keeps United ticking with his pass and move game but you would hope he could be more influential as he develops. 6

Wayne Rooney: Like Cleverley, saw an effort saved by Jaaskelainen but should have been more influential in the game. Played in his withdrawn role and as is to be expected worked hard but could have made more of an impact. 6

Robin Van Persie: Said in our match preview that he would get a goal and he did just that, but I didn’t think it would be in just 32  seconds! The goal was the highlight of another one of his quieter performances but if he can do that whilst not firing on all cylinders I won’t complain! 6

Javier Hernandez: Had Rafael not come on leaps and bounds this season, we would be emphasising just how much Hernandez has improved. Formerly a great striker but so-so player, the Mexican has improved his all round game and is no longer just a threat inside the box. An effort from the edge of the area forced a finger tips save from Jaaskelainen and could have done better with a chance before the break, but continues to offer something whilst feeding off scraps. 6

Subs

Ashley Young: Beyond his display against Chelsea upon his return, Ashley Young simply hasn’t been at the races for United, today was no different. 5

Danny Welbeck: Forced out wide again and did his best to show why he isn’t a wide player. Decent link up play and tracked as is to be expected of Danny. 5

Phil Jones: N/A

    Work well done united!

  2. Adam says:

Good point on Smalling and Evans. Hope they continue to grow esp as Rio & Vida get on in age

  3. Ray says:

Anderson impressed me again, which is a pleasant surprise. Without Nani and Valencia we were very narrow and that stiffled much of our play and made us easy to defend again. If Nani really is on his way out then we deserately need to find a replacement. We can’t play so narrow against the best teams and expect to win. Good to see a clean sheet and a solid performance from the back line.

Rooney was a joke and so was Cleverly. When Utd meet a decent team Smalling/Evans will be destroyed.
