Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed a number of Manchester United’s stars will miss the derby this weekend.

United will travel to the Etihad without Nani, Antonio Valencia, Tom Cleverley, Nemanja Vidic and Anderson whilst Shinji Kagawa has an outside chance of making the bench but is likely to be left out and instead face Sunderland.

Despite the number of important players missing from his team, Sir Alex believes he has the squad to deal with this:

“Tom Cleverley will have a scan this morning and we’ll see what he’s like. It’s his calf injury, which is a worry, but we’ll see.

“I thought Kagawa may have done enough to make the bench on Sunday but I don’t think he’ll be available until the Sunderland game.

“Vida, he’s doing well in training but I think the game on Sunday is a bit soon. I think he’ll be ready for Sunderland.

“Nani and Valencia are still out. It will be a few weeks with them.

“I know we’ve got a few injuries at the moment but we’ve got a big strong squad of players.”

Despite the absences, Sir Alex is hopeful his side can pull a surprise and beat City at the Etihad, handing them their first defeat there in 2 years:

“It’s a derby game and they’re notorious for surprises. City haven’t lost for two years at home so it’s going to be difficult. It will be hard but we’re capable of beating anyone, as we’ve proved time and time again.”

You have to say in Valencia, Anderson, Kagawa and Cleverley we are missing the midfield, along with Carrick, that you would ideally want to start the game if they were fit. The injuries are a blow but we have to deal with it and get a result with the squad we have. We do have a good squad, even if the defending has been shocking.

The team I see starting is:

Dea Gea, Rafeal, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Rooney, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Young, Van Persie.

@Terry what about playing Nick Powell instead of Scholes? I think its a great game to put the talented Powell in and see him explode into life in a Man Utd shirt.
