United tried to negotiate a deal for Shearer from a phone boothThe transfer window is open and a number of players have been linked with Manchester United.

This has always been the case but you have to sift through a fair number of garbage rumours to get to the ones with an ounce of truth. Sir Alex has said that he doesn’t expect to bring any players in, but you can expect him to be working hard behind the scenes to get the gears in motion for something.

Surprise or not, when Manchester United sign a player it makes big news and the same can be said for when we miss out on a player too. There have been a number of players that have slipped from our grasp and in the late 80s/90s there are 2 notable players that stand out.

Both Geordies, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer both ended up at different clubs despite interest from Manchester United and speaking to the MEN, former club solicitor and director on the board Maurice Watkins spoke on missing out on the two players:

“In my time at United there were two which I really thought we had a good chance of securing – Paul  Gascoigne and Alan Shearer.

“Well do I remember being perched on one leg in a phone box in Baker Street, London, trying to advance negotiations on Shearer with his agent.

“Perhaps there was something about Geordies! Both cases, however, were well before the introduction of the transfer window system.

“For a United supporter, it is a great shame neither player ever pulled on the red shirt. Shearer would have been a fantastic addition to an already strong team, and perhaps a few more European trophies would have been won if he had signed.

“I am also convinced Gazza would perhaps have received more protection and guidance at United than he received elsewhere, and that the mentoring of Sir Alex Ferguson would have benefitted not just his football but his life beyond the game.”
