Phil jones wants to be played at center back

In his last two performances Phil Jones has shown that he is just as comfortable at the back, as he is in the middle of the park.

The England international put in an impressive shift in midfield against Tottenham last Sunday, before shifting back to defence as United took on Fulham on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Jones’ position has long been a point of contention, with as many people arguing that he should a be a midfielder as those that argue he should be a center back. He’s even shone for United at right back but Jones himself has always insisted that his best work will come as a defender.

After neutralising the threat of Ruiz and Berbatov on Saturday, Sir Alex Ferguson stated that the 20 year old has more to his game than John Terry did at the same age and Jones again reiterated that he sees his long term future at center back even if he is happy to play anywhere Sir Alex selects him at the moment:

“I have said all along centre-half is where I feel most comfortable. I understand and read the game better there. But wherever I am asked to play I will play there.

“Prior to the two games Chris Smalling and I have played together for United recently, we played quite a lot together for England U21s and we know and understand each other’s game. It is not a problem playing together at the back.

“Yes, I kind of shoot myself in the foot (by being versatile) a bit but I am at Manchester United and I am happy to play anywhere.”
