Rio deserves a new deal

With the season drawing to an end, the club will now start getting down to the pressing issue of summer signings.

New manager David Moyes will be looking to add to the side he has inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson, but the one of his most important signings is already playing for the team.

A new midfielder could be on the shortlist as well as a new forward if Wayne Rooney gets his way and leaves Old Trafford but I like many would like to see him hand Rio Ferdinand a new deal.

Ferdinand has been brilliant this season and capped it off scoring the winner against Swansea yesterday in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game at Old Trafford, his first goal in 5 years.

With many thinking his time at the top level of the game was over due to injuries, Ferdinand has shone in United’s defence and in a season where injuries have befallen all of our centerbacks he has remained the one constant.

At 34, his performances even forced Roy Hodgson to recall him into the England set up and the defender is hoping for a new deal as he told MUTV yesterday after the game:

“Manchester United has a bright future.

“The manager has left the club in great health and we are looking forward. We have a great number of good young players who are eager to win things and be successful and work hard.

“That is what the manager has instilled in these players. The work ethic has to continue if we are going to be successful. I would like to be part of that.”

With his current deal expiring at the end of the season, the club should act fast to keep Ferdinand at Old Trafford.
