I never believed it when people would say Vidic could leave Manchester United. For a man that put his body on the line in every game I naively thought this equated to love for the club but realistically when you are on a couple thousand pounds a week it should be the norm.

This season the rumour mill has been in overdrive linking the Serb with a move away from Old Trafford with the Santiago Bernabeau his likely destination. I have never been a fan of keeping a player that does not want to stay so if he wants to leave then United should cash in.

A figure of £25m is being thrown around in regards to Vidic and having bought him for £7m in 2006, an £18m profit will only please the Glazers.

This season Vidic has been far from his best. It can be put down to injury and as well as lack of stability in United’s back line but also perhaps the fact that Vidic’s head has been turned. He no longer seems the dominating presence in United’s back line that he was and often draws fouls when a player gets the better of him.

I would like to put this down to the latter and with Rio Ferdinand now back from injury, I’m hoping the two can strike up the chemistry that saw United dominate in 07-08.

But if Vidic does want to leave, we could do way worse than signing Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini.

The 26 year old is one of if not Italy’s best defenders and at the £12m fee that is being touted for the  reigning Serie A defender of the year, it more than makes sense. Personally I don’t think he will go for £12m but with Juve continuing to fail in Serie A (Saturday’s defeat to Roma was their 8th this season as they sit in 5th place) he could jump ship.

Stories of Vidic’s departure are becoming increasingly frustrating to read as a United fan, now one of the best centre backs in the world, it would hurt to see him leave especially to Real Madrid. But as I have said, if he wants to leave with the fee that is being reported we would have to let him go.
