Amidst all the build up to last nights game, it would have been easy to fall into the trap of thinking it was Man Utd vs David Beckham but once the whistle went, the reality became apparent.

Anyone who believes Ronaldinho or even AC Milan are washed up, I implore you to watch last nights game. For the first 20 minutes of the game I feared a repeat San Siro performance as AC had us on the back foot and at the heart of it was the Brazilian as he scored in the opening 5 minutes whilst producing a number of ‘did he just do that?’ moments. Just as the game was dying and the tie looked beyond AC he set up Clarence Seedorf to breath life into the 2nd leg.

Yet the night was about 1 man, Wayne Rooney.

After feeding off scraps in the first half against a miserly defence, Rooney would go on to grab his 24th and 25th goals this term, his first and second in Europe this season. Performances like this further claims that Rooney is one of, if not the best strikers in the world as he stood up to be counted when United needed him.

With just 3 shots on target, Rooney left the San Siro with two goals and what goals they were. The first was reminiscent of Messi’s goal against us in the CL final, as jumping backwards he looped a header over Dida and for his second he raced through in space to nod past the hapless Dida. Yet if the goals were special then we must laud the assists.

With his first cross, Antonio Valencia did what Nani had failed to do in 65 minutes by playing a meaningful ball into the box whilst Fletcher, further shaking off the ‘anti-football’ tag, played a ball that completely neutralised AC Milan’s defence as it sailed over Alessandro Nesta’s head, straight to Rooney.

Following Scholes’ equalizer in the first half and Rooney’s brace United sat 3-1 up and were cruising but some of the gloss was taken off the win by Seedorf’s late equaliser. But I won’t complain 3 away goals and a win at the San Siro is something to be celebrated, the job is half done we just hope that we can finish it at Old Trafford on March 10th.
