Before Eric was the King, and Ruud and Wayne blazed a trail in the #10 shirt Man Utd had a hero. In the days of the ‘Holy Trinity’ Charlton was the man that upheld the tradition and values of the club whilst Best had the ladies swooning but Denis Law was the man that the lads on the terraces sang about.

You may remember the song,

We drink a drink a drink
To Eric the king the king the king
He’s the leader of our football team
He’s the greatest centre forward
That the world has ever seen

but before we toasted Eric Cantona, Denis Law was who they originally sang the song about as he broke records left, right and center.

His 46 goals in 42 games in United’s title winning 64/65 season is one that still stands (Sorry Cristiano!) and many count his goals as the reason we won the league that season.

The first United player to be crowned European footballer of the year, Sir Matt Busby himself said of all the players he had Law was the greatest, a massive compliment considering in his 25 years at the helm of the club he saw the likes of Edwards, Best, Charlton etc. And in the 4 years from 1963 to 1967 he was considered unplayable be many a defender as his finishing with his feet and his head made him the scourge of defenders up and down the country.

So today as the Lawman turns 70 we shall once again drink a drink to the king, but the original king, Denis Law.

Denis Law
Born: 24 February 1940
Joined United: 12 July 1962
United Debut: 18 August 1962 vs West Bromwich Albion, at Old Trafford

United Appearances: 404
United Goals: 237

We drink a drink a drink
To Eric the king the king the king
He’s the leader of our football team
He’s the greatest centre forward
That the world has ever seen
