The list of nominees for the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award has been released and as expected it is headed by Wayne Rooney.

The Striker has been made an early favourite to scoop the award but faces stiff competition from the likes of Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Man City’s Carlos Tevez.

Like Fabregas he is also nominated for the young player of the year award and in that competition he goes head to head with Aston Villa’s James Milner and Birmingham City’s Joe Hart.

Rooney has scored a career-best 34 goals for the United in all competitions this season including 26 in the league and if he wins will be the fourth successive winner of the award to come from Old Trafford club, following on from Ryan Giggs (2009) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2008 and 2007).
