Can we really expect any favours from Liverpool?

We’ve all seen the picture, “come back when you’ve won 18” the banner said and last year we came back to secure or 18th league title. Liverpool ran us close but our quality shone through and this year has been just as testing.

Injuries and dropping points when we shouldn’t have are amongst the reason why we find ourselves in our current situation but with 2 games left the title race is still on.

This Sunday we take on Sunderland in an all but easy game at the Stadium of Light. They have won 3 of their last 4 games including a win over Spurs. At Old Trafford we snatched a point late so we will have to be  firing on all cylinders to take all 3 points as earlier in the day Chelsea travel to Anfield.

No need to go into the whole history between us and Liverpool, needless to say they will be less than chuffed if they are the reason we win our 19th title so can we expect a proper effort from them?

Ian Rush, Steven Gerrard and John Barnes have all proclaimed that Liverpool will be trying their hardest and coming from those names it should fill you with hope but there is just a sneaking feeling that their just paying lip service. The likes of Gerrard and Carragher (although he was born an Evertonian) bleed Liverpool and would like nothing more than to derail our attempts at number 19.

On Thursday Liverpool take on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi final and as that is their only chance of silverware so their focus will be on that but last weekends results mean there is still a slight chance that they can make 4th place especially with Spurs still yet to take on Man City.

We’ve been in this position before, back in 1995 a close run season came down to the games played on the last day (not exactly the same I know) whilst we took on West Ham, Blackburn faced Liverpool. Liverpool kept up their end of ‘the deal’ by beating Blackburn 2-1 but we somehow failed to get the points so we will needed drawing 1-1 so whilst keeping an eye on Chelsea we will need to be on our Ps & Qs.

This is Liverpool’s last home game of the season in front of the famous Kop and we just hope they go out to impress, as professionals this shouldn’t even be in question but as it is the good old Scousers I’ll put nothing past them!
