One for the future but what about now? Rodwell affair is answering questions

Another day another player, yes ladies and gentlemen silly season is well and truly upon us and whilst we are meant to be battling Man City for the signature of James Milner we are also meant to have stepped up our pursuit for Everton’s Jack Rodwell.

It appears Rodwell has been destined to play for United since he emerged with some  stating he would be able to take over from Rio Ferdinand at the back as well as improve our engine room. The 19 year old  has been a revelation for Everton, even scoring against United during the season, and they will not want to see him go but United look ready to tempt them with a £15m bid.

Just last week Moyes had talked about tying him up with a new contract but £15m may be enough to force David Moyes hand.

Rodwell is a player of obvious talent and at 19 has his best years ahead of him but at this current stage is he really what we need? I don’t think Rodwell will step into the midfield and provide the energy/spark even though he has impressed both defensively and in an attacking capacity for Everton this season.

But the interesting prospect this signing throws up is that it casts doubt on Sir Alex’s claims that we could only be making one signing this summer.

I think Sir Alex realises that Rodwell is far from the complete article and if he is in fact looking at signing him then we may need a player who is more able to step into the team and do a job now. Rodwell is a player for the long term rather than just for now and Sir Alex himself has realised that the team needs additions so we could be bringing in more players.

This whole Jack Rodwell affair will be an interesting one and as talented as he is I’m sure other teams won’t sit by and watch us sign him. This could be the start of our summer spending.
