Having already seen Rio Ferdinand’s World Cup dream cut short by injury, another United player’s campaign has ended before it even begun as Nani was today also ruled out through injury.

After finally finding his feet at Old Trafford this season it was expected that the winger would be one of the tournament’s stars. Injury has ruined many team’s preparations and a number of stars will miss the competition including Andrea Pirlo, Michael Essien and Didier Drogba.

Not just affecting their nations hope’s I wonder but how will these injuries affect us as the new season begins in August?

Neither injury suffered by Rio or Nani should keep either player out for a drastic amount of time but it’s always a worry when a player gets an injury. Rio has been struggling as of late and this is just another to add to the list that saw him make a limited number of appearances for the club this past season.

Nani has suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the season that saw him miss a chunk of games and this knock that will now ruled him out of the World Cup could be a recurrence which will be worrying.

It’s an honour for ever player to represent their country and it’s naturally that both Rio and Nani will be disappointed but there is an upside.

The players will be afforded a summer of rest whilst others are playing in South Africa and let’s be honest Rio especially could do with going into the new season fully recharged. Sir Alex had claimed a number of his World Cup players would be given a rest at the start of the season so these injuries reduce the list by two therefore softening the blow.

Both players are important to the squad and having them back fully rested and potentially coming up against heavy legged players is a definite bonus and especially a player like Nani who has the pace and energy to give a fully fit and rested player nightmares anyway.

It’s a massive shame that neither player will be at the World Cup showcasing their obvious talent but it could just work out well for United.
