Welbeck will only benefit from the RIGHT loan move
We have supported some and opposed others as that is the nature of the loan. Some can be beneficial and help with the formation of a star, David Beckham’s move to Preston springs to mind. Yet for every loan like Beckham’s there are shockers, the kind of loans that make you think was there actually any point?
Like Guiseppe Rossi’s spell at St. James Park with Newcastle or Rodrigo Possebon who was initially meant to spend the whole of last season at Sporting Braga but after following out of favour at the Portuguese outfit returned to Old Trafford with just 1 appearance to his name.
Danny Welbeck was on loan at Preston last season and was going great guns scoring back to back goals against Roy Keane’s Ipswich on his home debut then against Barnsley but a knee injury sustained against Newcastle in February cut the loan spell short and he sat out the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery after returning to Old Trafford.
It was thought that Preston would again swoop to take Welbeck on loan this season as they did with Matty James who also shone on loan at Deepdale last term but Sunderland appear to have pushed to the front of the queue to secure Welbeck’s signature.
Danny Welbeck is a hot talent, he announced his arrival in spectacular style against Stoke a few years back and his goal against Derby in the FA Cup reaffirmed his potential. A few shaky appearances had some United fans questioning him but for people who have followed his progress from academy to the reserves to first team or even people with eyes you can see there is something about him that’s why i would object to him going to Sunderland.
Welbeck is a forward, he has been employed wide but I think you get the best from him up top. Preston employed him mainly as a forward and he did fine but at Sunderland I don’t think it would be the same situation. They already have Darren Bent, Kenwye Jones and former United boy Frazier Campbell as attacking options and it’s unlikely that Welbeck will just jump the pecking order. He isn’t likely to see much playing time with these players ahead of him or if he does it could possibly be out wide or in low key games.
I would prefer to see him play at Preston where the quality of opposition may not be the same but he will see more playing time in his ‘proper’ position rather than at Sunderland where although at a higher level he may not actually benefit from his time away.
At just 19 these are important years in a player’s development and for Welbeck a loan spell away from the club could do him the world of good, it’s just important that it’s the right club that he join if he does leave.
