We’ve had some top kits in our time, regardless of the sponsor and manufacturer they never fail to get people talking so I have decided to compile a list of iconic kits from the last 2 decades or so.
Having waited 26 years, we secured our first title and at the same time were the first winners of the Premier League with a 10 point advantage over second place Aston Villa.
With Old Trafford watermarked into the shirt and a new laceless collar, this kit was popular especially with a Mr. Cantona who sparked a trend by wearing his collar up.
The thing I will remember this kit for amongst others is that game against West Ham on the final day of the 94/95 season. Try as we may we couldn’t get the ball into the net and ended up missing out on the league. A sad ending to what was a very nice kit!
From one away kit to another, this infamous shirt was the reason we crashed 3-1 to Southampton at the Dell if Sir Alex is to be believed. He may have had a point, following the game the kit was retired and we went on to win every game to take the title!
This kit lasted from 96 to 98 but the significance of this top is the badge. If you look you will see it still says “Manchester United Football Club” the last time our badge had these words.
Well with the removal of “Football Club” from the badge the club carried on with the revolution by adding a zip to the kit. It went on to become the best selling replica kit of all time.
In paying homage to the old club Newton Heath, I’m sure Umbro didn’t realise the impact the kit would have 17 years later when we used these same colours to punctuate our anti-Glazer protests. Rumours that The Glazers were planning on releasing a green and gold kit for this season are still unconfirmed.
