Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Edwin Van Der Sar will indeed be retiring at the end of the season.

Speculation has been rife that this would be the Dutch keeper’s last bow as he reached the milestone of 40 in October and the signing of Anders Lindegaard made this seem more likely. It was thought he may have left at the end of last season after his wife fell ill but he prolonged his stay one more time but this morning speaking ahead of United’s game at Sunderland Sir Alex confirmed that Van Der Sar would be hanging up his gloves.

The loss of Edwin comes as a massive blow as he provided stability in goal that we had lacked since Peter Schmeichel’s departure but it isn’t all doom and gloom as a coaching role may be lined up for him:

“He’ll be of interest in terms of knowledge & experience, but not discussed it yet”
