PICTURE: The Passion of Gary Neville

February 7, 2011

When Esquire released their April 1968 magazine, it was to huge uproar.

On the cover was Muhammad Ali, public enemy #1 at the time but that wasn’t what had people in outrage rather it was the fact he was depicted Saint Sebastien, the patron saint of athletes who was shot with arrows for his steadfast religious belief. Ali, as you will know, was made a pariah in the States for his refusal to be called up to the American army to go and fight in Vietnam so it’s funny to see Neville who never had a problem speaking up about things he disagrees mocked up the same way!

Who can forget when Red Nev almost lead a player revolt after Rio Ferdinand was banned for missing a drug test? Neville has been called a lot of things in his time, sock sucker probably being the one that stands out but I don’t think ANYONE has called him a saint least of all Jose Reyes!
