VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Obertan gets a double against Newcastle reserves
Coming into the game off a 2-2 draw with Newcastle’s rivals Sunderland, a second half brace from Gabriel Obertan was enough for United to take all the points despite a late goal from Michael Richardson.
United were the first to register a chance when Obertan’s long range effort deflected wide and Obertan was the first from United to test goalkeeper Tim Krul on the half hour when he was forced to get down low to keep Obertan’s effort out. 10 minutes late a 30 yard effort from Ravel Morrison crashed off the top of the crossbar with some assistance from the wind but that was to be his last meaningful contribution as he and James Perch were sent off for an off the ball incident.
Perch reacted to being kicked by Morrison by grabbing the 18 year old by the throat and both were shown reds meaning Morrison now misses both legs of the FA Youth Cup.
After the break Newcastle went close to breaking the deadlock when Michael Richardson was inches from knocking in Leadbitter low cross but they would be made to pay when Obertan gave United the lead on the 68th minute.
Obertan collected Norwood’s long ball over the top and cooly slotted past Krul to give United the lead. Five minutes from time United doubled the lead when sub Petrucci found Obertan and his left footed finish went high past Krul.
Newcastle were to got a goal back immediately after when Patrick McLaughlin’s low cross from the left was swept in by Richardson but it was all in vain as United held on for the win.
