As expect Nemanja Vidic has been shortlisted for the PFA Player of the year award.

The defender, who was made captain at the start of this season, has been monumental in our charge towards the title and rightly his great season has been rewarded with a place on the list that sees him go head to head with Gareth Bale, Samir Nasri, Scotty Parker, Carlos Tevez, Charlie Adam and Rafael Van der Vaart.

Speaking on Vidic’s nomination, PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said:

“He has been a success story. It took him a while to settle in but now he is acknowledged as one of the world’s best defenders. When they are fit, Vidic and Rio Ferdinand are as good a pair of central defenders as you could expect to come across in the whole world. It is not often defenders get so highly rated with regard to our nominations but he certainly deserves to be up there.”

Whilst Vidic’s place on the list is well deserved, one can only scratch his head at the failure to include Luis Nani who has been equally influential in our season.

The Portuguese winger joins Javier Hernandez on the list of Young Player of the Year alongside Bale, Nasri, Seamus Coleman and Joe Hart.

Taylor also had good things to say about both Nani and Hernandez saying of the Mexican,

“The way he has adapted to the English game is quite exceptional, and it says a lot for his character and ability that he has been able to come over here and showcase everything that is good about Mexican football.”

whilst Taylor commended Nani’s skill and bravery,

“I have seen him take some terrible punishment this year from defenders and he has shown great bravery in getting up and getting on with it. He has great skill and he has had the opportunity to show that more consistently for Manchester United.”
