Rio Ferdinand’s return to first team action is good news.

The defender’s quality was on display at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as he helped keep Chelsea at bay and with a tough run of games on three different fronts it’s safe to say the fact he is available for selection is good news for all.

Well not everyone.

As Ferdinand resumes his place in the center of defence alongside Nemanja Vidic, someone inevitably will have to drop out namely rising star Chris Smalling.

The young defender has superbly filled in for Ferdinand in his injury enforced absence and is easily amongst the buys of the season. At just 21 Smalling’s early showing in his United career has filled fans with optimism and his good form hasn’t been lost on Sir Alex who has vowed he won’t be forgotten,

“It was a terrible for me to explain to Chris Smalling that he wasn’t playing given the way he has performed for us this season.

“He understood. He is part of the squad and he won’t be forgotten.

“But it’s Rio’s experience isn’t it. He has such composure. He talks to players.”
