It has been a long, tough season for Manchester United and as the culmination appears, inevitably praise is meted out to those that have done stellar jobs.

Of course names like Berbatov, Vidic, van der Sar, Hernandez and Nani will appear but captain Nemanja Vidic has reserved special praise for one of our stars.

Chris Smalling’s rise to prominence has been all the more remarkable when you consider that just a short time ago he was playing non league football. A move to Old Trafford raised the eyebrows of more than a few when it was announced last January but the young defender has more than held his own this season doing nothing to suggest he is out of his league playing for the biggest team in the England in the toughest league in Europe.

Injury has seen him play more games than he probably thought he would and Vidic, who has often partnered him, has seen enough to suggest that Smalling has a very bright future,

“Chris has done very well.

“He didn’t have any trouble stepping into the team and he showed everybody how good a player he is.

“It has been a great season for him and he has a big future in front of him.

“He is only 21, so it is a massive achievement for him to have played so many games at his age for this club.”
