Paul Scholes called time on his United career in May but if he had his way he would have been starting pre season this week.

United fans demanded an extra year from the gifted midfielder and they may have got their wish, it just would not have been at Old Trafford as Scholes sought to end his career with Oldham.

It had long been rumoured that Scholes would see out his final year with his boyhood club and speaking to the club’s official site he confirmed that he did indeed plan to end his career at Boundary Park but concerns over his fitness curtailed these plans.

“I’m disappointed I never got the chance to play at Boundary Park.

“I thought I might get the chance to appear in a cup game, but sadly it didn’t happen.

“I think people assumed that because I’m an Oldham fan and I’m from Oldham that I would finish my career with them, though there was never any contact.

“If I felt I could have played on, and Oldham was an option, I would definitely have joined them.”
