Any French star that signs for United will inevitably have a huge task on their hands.
Eric Cantona set the barrier extremely high for those that would follow in his footsteps as the enigmatic former Marseille star would go on to become a talisman for United and seemingly the catalyst to our success in the 90s, featuring on sites like footballscores.com/ with regular occurrence.
We have had some hits as well as misses in terms of French players since Cantona decided to call it a day in 1997 but in current French left back Patrice Evra we undeniably have a star.
Evra has been a main stay in United’s defence following a shaky start back in 2006 and it may be because of Cantona that we can boast of having one of the world’s finest left backs in our midsts.
Speaking on the newly launched French version of the club’s official site Evra paid tribute to ‘the King’ stating,
“I already knew Cantona was ‘The King’ but I really discovered who he was when I arrived here. He is a legend.
“If French football players like me succeed at United, it is him who first opened the doors for us. We will never thank him enough for that.
“During my first season, I watched lots of Eric’s DVDs and told myself ‘you now know what the United fans are expecting from the French players.'”
